The battalion held on doggedly, though all the volunteers could do was to cower in the trenches, hoping for the barrage to end: ‘You could hear the screaming of the bombs and always the screaming seemed to be coming towards the back of your neck.’99 Some Nationalist planes flew very low, picking out their targets: ‘You could see them as they dived down at us. It was harrowing in the extreme to experience a dive-bomber strafing. I’d never even thought about such a thing before. For those who’ve never experienced it I hope they never will. It’s a frightening thing to be trying to get as close to the earth as possible with bullets besplattering all over the place.101
